A Reflection
As the semester is coming to an end, we’ve been asked to share our final takeaways from working on this weekly blog and how we can implement what we’ve learned.
Throughout my time at the Payne School of Hospitality, we’ve learned about being a better leader and the pathways we can take to best support and lead our teams. This particular course, however, dove into the various theories which brought so much more depth to the topic. Requiring us to do a short write-up about each set of theories, as we are learning them, really pushed us to understand them. It’s been said that the best way to know if you have actually learned something is to try and teach it to someone else. This blog is forcing us to do just that and I’m thankful to have had this experience. Plus, it will be wonderful to be able to come back, later in my career, and re-read what I’ve learned in this course.
Learning about leadership theories like path-goal, XY, and situational theories is what has stood out the most. These specific theories resonate with me and are most likely to be what I work to pay attention to and implement going forward. At work, I’ve already begun to pay attention to the level of competency and commitment of my individual followers to ensure that I’m giving them the support they actually need. Honestly, I don’t think I was doing this before, and was instead trying to guide everyone in the same way. The Blanchard Situational Leadership® II Model is probably now forever ingrained in my mind (lol).
I’d like to close out this blog with an introduction to my professional portfolio where you can review the activities we’ve completed in the Hospitality & Tourism Management program, as well as my own professional experiences in event management.
